A special storybook created to offer emotional support and courage to children living with pLGG (Pediatric Low-Grade Glioma), a group of slow-growing brain and spinal cord tumours. The story follows four children with pLGG who meet at a summer camp, providing reassurance to young readers facing similar challenges.

Ask

Working from an existing script, I was tasked with designing the four main characters, each representing different symptoms and experiences of pLGG. The layout also required careful thought: for children with this condition, a consistent and predictable structure matters. Clear separation between image and text, and a restrained layout free from visual noise, makes the reading experience easier to follow and less cognitively demanding.

Solution

I developed several character style directions, each giving a sense of the overall illustrative tone of the book, and incorporated feedback thoughtfully, every decision carrying extra weight given the sensitivity of the audience. With only one illustration permitted per page in an otherwise text-heavy book, I approached the scene allocation deliberately, ensuring each image carried the narrative forward and helped young readers stay engaged with the story.

Outcome

The book was warmly received by patients, families, and healthcare professionals across the United States. Its impact extended further with a sequel in audiobook format and the project was recognised with a Gold Aster Award at the 2026 Aster Awards, one of the most respected healthcare advertising honours in the US.
